One of the major neurotransmitters that has been linked to schizophrenia is dopamine. This substance is a neurotransmitter which functions to control the reward and pleasure center of the brain. It regulates emotional end movement responses. In recent studies, dopamine is being associated to developing schizophrenia. The theory states that too much of this substance causes schizophrenia because the medications used in treating this illness block the dopamine receptors which would cause for these receptors to produce more because they would get the wrong signals. Increase in dopamine levels lead to paranoia, withdrawal from social interactions and having a suspicious personality.
