There are three most common etiologies responsible for food poisoning. First is Staphylococcus aureus, although the bacteria itself is not responsible for food poisoning, staphylococcal toxins deposited in the food can be responsible for gastrointestinal disturbances. Second is Escherichia coli and this is commonly from fecal contamination of the food since E. coli is commonly found in the gastrointestinal tract. Lastly is Salmonella typhi which can cause typhoid fever and this is commonly acquired through eating contaminated foods.
