A third-degree burn is the most serious type of burn, as it involves all layers of skin and can severely damage muscle and tissue. Skin grafting is necessary to provide a protective layer for the burned area so that it is able to heal. It acts as a protective barrier so that bacteria isn't able to infect the burned portion of skin and reduces the course of treatment needed.
