    In animal cell mitosis, he cleavage furrow forms during the early anaphase of the cell cycle. It's caused by a ring of actin microfilaments, called the contractile ring. The actin filaments are both pre-existing and new. The contractile ring tightens around the cytoplasm of the cell.
