    A pot of water, a pot (assuming metal) is a great conductor compared to a cup of water. You can measure the heat and basically it'll prove to you that the thermal energy greatly increased.

    Thermals energy is the energy that is generated and measured by heat. If the pot is hot from being on a stove there is heat making the thermal energy higher than the room temperature cup of water.
