Would you expect muscle cells or skin cells to have more mitochondria in them and why? Choose the best response.

A. Muscle cells because your muscles require lots of energy to function and keep your body moving and the mitochondria is the part of the cell that creates energy for our bodies.

B. Muscle cells because they are bigger than the skin cells, so there is more space in them to hold the mitochondria.

C. Skin cells because they are on the surface of your body and you have more of them, so they would need to hold more mitochondria.

D. Skin cells because the function of the mitochondria is to provide elasticity to our bodies and our skin needs to be able to stretch.

Answer: Muscle cells and neurons spend more energy (ATP) than do fat or skin cells. The more energy a cell needs - greater in neurons and muscle cells, less in more "passive" cells - the more mitochondria tend to be present in the cell.
