What happens in the bodies of those premature newborn babies is that, there is an increase of the destruction of the red blood cells. Due to this destruction, heme is being released which is then converted into bilirubin by the liver. Because of increased bilirubin, not all are being conjugated and therefore, released in the blood, resulting in the yellowish in color.
