The purpose of photosynthesis is to produce C6O12H6 + O6 (Reactant for cellular respiration and products if photosynthesis) for the plant, but also in the process it releases oxygen. After they produce the formula above then they can either store the sugar or put it through cellular respiration to get the ATP they need.
