    Genetic drift in a population affects the gene pool in that it decreases the genetic variation.

    Explanation; Genetic drift is the change in a gene pool due to chance events, such as disasters, or war among others. Smaller populations are more affected by genetic drift. It is the gradual changes in gene frequencies in a population due to random events. Genetic drift may cause a bottleneck effect or founder effect on a population. Bottleneck effect occurs when a natural disaster hits and the population is drastically decreased then the surviving population is dramatically altered by genetic drift. Founder effect on the other hand occurs when one individual moving to an island or a new area as a result in dramatically different allele frequencies.
