Consumers are those animals who depend on others like plants or other animals for their food. Humans are considered as consumers because they neither depend on plants completely for their food nor they depend fully on other animals also they do not make their own food but they require both plants and animals for their food.

Plants are called producers because they actually produce their own food via chloroplasts, sunlight, and water. People cannot produce their own food within the body, but must take it in from other sources, thus they are called consumers.
