Farmers sometimes use slash and burn farming techniques, which consist of cutting down and burning forests to make enough room to grow crops. There are several problems with this, including that the farmland created by this method is only good for a short time.

The smoke released from the fire is terrible for the air. The slashing and burning obviously causes the destruction of an ecosystem, and since the ash from the burning only keeps the soil fertile for a few years before all of the nutrients are used up, the farmer will probably end up destroying more ecosystems in the future.
