The plants growing in the soil with high moisture content, it is assumed that these plants allowed to grow in shade. Hence, these plants will not receive sufficient sunlight. Therefore, the student has introduced different amounts of sunlight as an extra variable. To remedy the error, the student should keep both set of plants in the same amount of sunlight, but vary the amount of water received by each plant. The variable here should be water content, not sunlight.
