    The root is the organ of a plant that lies under the surface of the soil or grows up above the ground or usually above water. Part of the functions of the root is that it serves as storage of food and nutrients. Plants create simple sugars, such as glucose and fructose, and starches which they use immediately or stores in the roots for later use.

    The leaves of a plant make sugar during the process of photosynthesis. To make sugar, the plant uses chlorophyll, energy from sunlight, carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and water. Some of the glucose (sugar) is changed to starch which they typically store in the roots for later use.
