Organisms must break down the food they ingest before their bodies can generate the chemicals and energy necessary for life. The processing of food is called digestion. Digestion breaks down food into various nutrients. Glucose is sent to cells for ATP production Leaping toward a blade of grass, a grasshopper never reaches its goal. Its last view of the world is the fangs of the spider that snared it. For the spider, digestion begins before it even takes a bite, when it regurgitates digestive juices onto the grasshopper to soften the hard body parts.
