Although the outer mitochondrial membrane is permeable to all small molecules, the inner mitochondrial membrane is essentially impermeable in the absence of specific transport proteins. Taking this information, along with what you have learned about the citric acid cycle, into consideration, present two types of benefits derived from separating the reactions of glycolysis in the cytosol from those that occur during the citric acid cycle in the mitochondrion.

    The first benefit is that in two different regions more ATP is produced for the cell while the second benefit is that it puts less burden on one organelle for the production of energy. If one organelle is responsible for energy production, so less ATP molecules are formed and less energy is available for various activities of the cell.
