The cytoplasm of one plant cell is continuous with the cytoplasm of its neighbors via plasmodesmata. Unify most of the plant into one living continuum. The plasma membrane of adjacent cells line the channels of the plasmodesmata and thus are continuous, letting water and small solutes pass freely from cell to cell, and sometimes certain proteins and RNA.
