    ATP is the currency of the energy produced in all living organisms. It is needed for all cellular functions in the body. The synthesis of ATP occurs during cellular respiration in the mitochondria, in 3 - stages of glycolysis, kreb's cycle and oxidative phosphorylation.

    Structurally, it is made up of 3 - phospahte molecules bonded to a molecule made adenosine, Thus is is refers to as Adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

    The energy trapped in ATPs is liberated when each of the three bonds that bonded phophate group to the adenosine compound is broken down. Each bond breaking gives 30.5kj/mol. This is the energy liberated for cellular activities of the cell.
