Elastic stockings or also known as compression stockings are recommended after an operation in order to prevent the formation of blood clots in the leg that is operated. Usually, they are recommended when there will be difficulty in moving around after surgery.

When assessing a patient who wears them, the health professional should ensure that every part on the edge of the stockings is receiving enough circulation. The toes should be checked for signs of reduced blood flow and also the patient should be asked for any dangerous signs of numbness or tingling.
