    A. number of cells

Number of cells does not account for classification of living things. Classification is on the basis of characteristics and number of cells is not any characteristic of living things. Number of cells will just denote the size of living things. On the other hand, presence of cell membrane, nucleus and mode of nutrition are all characteristics which are used for classification of living things.
