Why aren't ferns commonly found in deserts? Ferns are nonvascular and cannot absorb water from deep within the soil. Fern fronds are sensitive to UV light. Fern pollen is spread by insects that do not occur in deserts. Fern spores are unable to resist prolonged dry conditions.

Ferns form spores in sporangia and bursting of sporangia discharge spores. These spores are not able to withstand the dry conditions for a long time and die under a prolonged scarcity of water. Ferns also use water as a transport medium to transport the sperms to the neck of an archegonium.
