A population changes in response to a change in the environment.

    Explanation:

Darwin observed that organisms that reproduce sexually show certain variations that are inherited and induced by changes in the environment. The result of this variation is that some offspring will possess characteristics that will enable them to exploit their environment better than the rest. The offspring with favourable characteristics survive to reproductive maturity and give rise to offspring of the next generation.
