Consumed alcohol passes through the blood to the unborn baby's developing body through the placenta. A baby's liver is one of the last organs to develop and doesn't mature until the later stages of pregnancy. The baby cannot process alcohol due to the poor functioning of its liver. This seriously affect the baby's development. Drinking alcohol, especially in the first three months of pregnancy, increases the risk of miscarriage and premature birth. Drinking after the first three months of your pregnancy could affect the baby after its birth. The effects include learning difficulties and behavioural problems. Drinking heavily throughout pregnancy can cause the baby to develop a serious condition called foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) that leads to poor brain development and body growth.
