The possession of flagellated sperm is considered a primitive characteristic in the plant kingdom. A flagellated sperm has a special characteristic called flagellum, which enables the sperm to propel and swim in the water. Plants who live in water have flagellated sperm since their sperm needs to swim to reach the eggs. More evolved plant species are terrestrial, therefore their sperm is transferred to the eggs through the air or pollinating insects. At this evolutionary stage, the sperm of the plant lost its flagellum.
