Many plants that grow in cooler climates where freezing temperatures are common have needles instead of leaves. These needles have less surface area than a broad leaf, and are coated in a waxy coating. Why are needles common leaf adaptations in cooler climates?

    Needle are common leaf adaptation in plants crowing in cooler climates because needle like shape do not allow snow to stay on it for longer. The shape reduces the surface area preventing the loss of water through transpiration. A waxy coat on the surface also prevents the loss of water.
