    To produce ATP.

    Explanation:

Carbohydrates are important in the body because they contribute to the body's ability to produce ATP.

When a person eats food, the carbohydrates in it are broken down which in turn produce an energy rich component called ATP (adenosine triphosphate).

These carbohydrates are broken down by certain enzymes in the small intestine which are present in the form of glucose which then yields ATP to drive the cell.
