In the winter, food is scarce in the tundra. Whimbrels are shorebirds that have nesting grounds in the Canadian tundra. Every spring, they can be seen along the southeastern coast of the United States. There, they feast on small crabs on their way back to their northern nesting grounds. Scientists have tracked the migration routes of these birds, which are shown on the map.
