What is the purpose of nictating membrane?

The nictating membrane is known to be capable of giving the eye extra protection. The usage of this membrane allows "blinking" even when able to see, and is also used widely by frogs in order to consistently look for prey. This membrane had its name from the Latin word "nictare" which means "to blink".
