    ATP or adenosine triphosphate is a key component in the process of respiration. When bonds break in ATP molecules adenosine diphosphate and energy are the products. The two reactions are ATP breaks down to ADP and energy is released. This is how energy is released from the foods we eat.

    This reaction occurs in the mitochondria. Mitochondria are tiny organelles in cells that possesses it's own DNA. Mitochondria are also known as the 'powerhouse' of the cell.
