After a protein is produced the protein is secreted through organelles in the cell via signal sequences. In eukaryotic cells, proteins pass through the endoplasmic reticulum and the Golgi apparatus. The proteins are sorted by the Golgi and bind to the endoplasmic reticulum by a signal sequence to the membrane, which is then detached. The signal sequence is produced by translation and is located on the ribosome surface; a signal recognition particle binds to the sequence blocking translation of the mRNA until the protein complex reaches theER. The protein enters the cisternal space is removed from the polypeptide by an enzyme. The protein becomes modified into a glycoprotein and is then transferred to the Golgi apparatus by vesicles where they are sorted and secreted to the cell surface to fuse with the plasma membrane. The packaged proteins are then released to the outside of the cell.
