If a red blood cell is being placed in water, the water diffuses into the cell by a process known as osmosis. Because the cell membrane is semi-permeable and weak and because of an increase in pressure, the cell will burst. Moreover, distilled water is a hypotonic solution in comparison with the hypertonicity of the intracellular fluid of red blood cells/erythrocytes which would definitely cause such reaction.
