Carbon is released when a plant dies. This is because during cellular respiration, the plants intake carbon-dioxide from the atmosphere, converting it to oxygen which is then expelled. The carbon is stored and used as one of the plants staple resources. With such activities as deforestation, large amounts of carbon are released into the atmosphere while simultaneously decreasing the planets ability to filter harmful greenhouse gasses.
