Punctuated equilibrium is a theory in the biology of evolution. It indicates that once a specie is found in the record of fossils, it's already stable and this is also called as stasis.

Punctuated equilibrium results to the process of Cladogenesis of which a specie is split into two distinct species rather than a specie transforming into another specie.
