A scientist engineers a virus that contains the gene thought to provide bacterial resistance to the antibiotic vancomycin. The scientist then takes a culture of bacteria and divides it in two. One portion is allowed to incubate with the previously mentioned virus, while the other is not. Both bacterial cultures are then placed onto petri plates whose media contain vancomycin. Only the culture grown previously with viruses shows growth of bacterial colonies. How did these bacteria FIRST come to have resistance to this antibiotic?     Bacteriophages (or phages) are viruses known for its ability to contaminate and become a parasite in a bacteria. These phages can pass its DNA from a single bacterium to another bacterium, via a means referred to as genetic transduction.

    This is believed to be the centre route through which bacteria evolve and possess the antibiotic resistance and virulence factors that increases the formation of new and an increasingly more pathogenic strains.

    The mechanisms of genetic transduction includes generalized and specialized transduction.
