    Longitudinal diffusion

    This is a more important term in gas chromatography because the diffusion coefficient is much larger in gases than in liquids. The solute molecules move in different directions in the stationary phase due to the porosity of the particles that form it. This causes some solute molecules to leave the spine behind the majority.
