A sociologist might view the doctor’s recommendation as a result of the belief in a binary sex system. The doctors must often make decisions based on what is immediately in front of them and on all that they themselves have been taught about sex, sexuality and gender. The social norm about sex and gender is built around a binary sex system and so it is not surprising that a doctor might recommend choices based on that perspective.
