A 6-week-old infant has surgery for hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (HPS). When encouraged to participate in caring for her infant, the mother readily assists with all aspects of care but is reluctant to resume feeding her baby. The mother states, "I just can't stand to watch him choke and cough." What is the most likely reason that the mother does not feed her infant?

    Explanation:

    HPS is a clincal disorder in which the pyrolysis muscle block the stomach opening to the small intestine, therefore preventing food from moving into th esmall intestine.

    It is common in male babies under 6 months, and can be corrected by surgery.

    Due to the fact that the mother has experienced vomiting in her baby (projective vomiting) she was skeptical of resuming feeding.

    However, the nurse need to give reassurance that this will not reoccur, and feeding of the baby should resume.
