Islets of Langerhans of the pancreatic islets are the endocrine cells that are found in the pancreas. These are known as endocrine cells because they secrete hormones. There are two types of islet - alpha and beta. The alpha cells are responsible for the secretion of the hormone glucagon and the beta cells for the secretion of insulin. The release of hormones from either the beta or alpha cells is regulated by the blood glucose levels. If the level of glucose in the blood is low glucagon is released and if the glucose level is high then insulin is released.
