Minerals are related to compounds and elements.

A mineral is defined as a naturally occurring substance that has a definite chemical composition and crystal structure.

Most minerals are made of two or more elements that are chemically combined together to form a compound. Others such as gold or copper are made of a single element. Minerals are grouped according to their chemical composition or makeup.

A mineral is always a solid and has a definite shape and volume and always has a characteristic crystal structure.
