You are at the grocery store and trying to decide what type of salt to buy. One option is advertized as salt (non-iodized) the other is iodized salt. You remember that back in your biology class you learned something about iodine. Why would the manufacturer add iodine to salt?

    Iodine is an important trace element of the body. One should include ionized salt in its diet as iodine acts as a precursor of thyroxine hormone. The deficiency of iodine in the body can cause a disease known as goiter. Iodine plays an important role in the growth and metabolism of an individual.
