These are the 6 major processes involved in the gastro intestinal tract:

    1. Ingestion: this starts one food is placed on mouth. This occurs in the oral cavity where the food is chewed and mixed with saliva.

    2. Propulsion: this is the movement of the food from one area to the next area in the gastrointestinal tract. This is primarily done by peristaltic movement, where muscle of the esophagus contracts and relaxes to move the food.

    3. Digestion: this occurs not only in the stomach. Before food reached the stomach it is mechanically digested in the mouth.

    4. Chemical digestion is done by stomach by using enzymes and acids to breakdown food.

    5. Absorption: Transport of digested products from the lumen of GIT to the bloodstream.

    6. Defecation. This is the excretion of undigested food particle and considered as the waste product of the process.
