    A. a segment of DNA

A gene is a functional segment of DNA that codes for a protein. One gene codes for a distinct type of protein. From genes, mRNAs are transcribed. These mRNAs are then translated to form proteins which regulate most of the cellular processes, and thus play a crucial role in cell survival and growth.
