What is required for reactants to form bonds?

    Initial energy input that meets or exceeds the activation energy (the amount of energy needed for this is different for all reactions).

    This is true for both endothermic and exothermic reactions, because energy must be supplied to break the bonds holding the atoms of the reactants together before they can rejoin in a different combination (to form the products)
