Because it allows the cell to have flexibility, allowing the transport of important substances across the membrane to occur.

    Explanation:

The whole cell, whether prokaryote or eukaryote, has a membrane that isolates from the outside: the plasma membrane. This membrane is so thin (between 6 and 9 nm) that the finest optical microscopes could not make it visible. This membrane must be fluid, because the cell must export elements to its exterior and incorporate elements that are outside. If the membrane were rigid this would not be possible and the cell would eventually die.

The plasma membrane is a fluid combination of cholesterol, phospholipids, proteins, and cholesterol. The carbohydrates combined with lipids and to proteins elongate from the protruding surface of the membrane. The fluid feature of the cell membrane permits for greater cell flexibility than it would if the membrane would have been rigid. It also permits for the movement of the components of membrane that are needed for certain kinds of membrane transport.
