    Question number 1: Explain the endosymbiotic theory of the origin of eukaryotic cells in your own words.

    The endosymbiotic theory can be explained as the idea that certain organelles were originally divided into separate organisms, which were then absorbed by eukaryotic cells, and fostered a symbiotic relationship. This process developed until the organelles became dependent on the cells to durvive.

    Question number 2: Describe three properties of mitochondria and chloroplasts that support the endosymbiotic theory.

    Chloroplasts and mitochondria both have their own unique DNA, which is different to that stored in the nucleus. Many organelles have a double membrane, which might be evidence that the inner membrane could have belonged to the prokaryote. Thirdly, the splitting process used by both mitochondria and chloroplasts is similar to that used in prokaryotes in fission.
