Bacteriophages are used for making genomic libraries. Small parts of the foreign DNA can be joined together into a reduced versions of a phage genome, the plasmid. The normal infection process also enable production of many new phage particles, each carrying the foreign DNA. One advantage is that they can create many new phages.
