Define a zoonotic pathogen. Explain, with an example, how zoonotic pathogens may be controlled.

    A pathogen is a microorganism that can cause disease. Zoonotic pathogen transmits disease naturally between animals and humans. The common pathway to transmit disease is air, water, contaminated food and hand to mouth contact. Humans can usually fight against the more common zoonotic pathogens but if the immune system is not prepared for the pathogen, it can harm the body.

    Salmonella infection is a very common zoonotic infection. It is caused by Salmonella bacteria. Following steps can be taken to control it:

    Raw and under cooked eggs and meat should not be eaten Food should be properly refrigerated Cooked food and raw food should not be mixed Hands should be washed well before handling food After touching animals, hands should be washed well.
