The GER or gastroesophageal reflux takes place when the contents of the stomach come back up into the esophagus leading to heartburn. The GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease is a more critical and enduring form of GER and may inhibit an infant from feeding.

The main signs of GERD in infants is spitting up more than they usually do. Other signs include vomiting, colic, and refusing to eat. The GERD takes place when the lower esophageal sphincter of an infant is not completely developed. Thus, the nurse should be looking for the signs of irritability, choking with feeding, failure to thrive, regurgitation, and spitting up.
