    The process starts in the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus releases corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH). This in turn stimulates the pituitary gland to release the adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH). ACTH then stimultes the adrenal cortex to release corticosteroid hormones.
