    Chemiosmotic hypothesis was proposed by peter Mitchell in 1961 to draw the relationship between electron transport chain and oxidative phosphorylation.

    During electron transport chain electrons are transported from one electron carrier along with the transport of protons from matrix to intermembrane space. When these protons moves along the concentration gradient from intermembrane space to matrix, proton motive force is generated which is used by Fo F1 ATPase to phosphorylate ADP by using inorganic phosphate (pi) to generate ATP.
