Functions performed by a cell depend on its size and shape.

    Explanation:

In addition to a number of other important factors, cell size and shape play a major role in determining its functions. This is popularly referred to as the structure-function relationship in the subject of biology.

Any individual organism has cells of different shapes and sizes as part of its body. These building blocks of life are shaped differently so as to be able to perform certain specialized tasks.

For instance, the neurons (a part of our nervous system) are cells that are long, thin and branched, like electrical wiring. This is because they are required to carry nerve impulses throughout the body, as part of a larger communication network.

Another example is the immune cells in the body, which are capable of changing their shapes in different situations. They can squeeze past other cells (become smaller), and can even create a hollow to engulf (destroy or 'swallow') harmful disease-causing bacteria/viruses to protect the body.
